Cultivating the Seeds for Sustainable Good

Founder Notes | the farmer in the hospital

Angela Rainwater, as both Project Director of the Food is Medicine program at Allendale County Hospital and founder and President of The Good Fruit Foundation, embodies a profound commitment to community impact, underserved individuals, leadership, innovation, and collaboration. Her work is driven by a deep love for others and a steadfast belief in the transformative and healing power of plant-based initiatives.

The daughter of a local produce farmer, Angela’s journey began with her recognition of the disconnect between the abundance of fresh produce that often tragically goes underutilized in consumer markets, while we experience growing health disparities locally and nationally due to under-consumption. This inspired her to leave her family’s farm and dedicate herself to addressing systemic health challenges through plant-based nutrition and lifestyle medicine. As now Project Director of the Food is Medicine program, Angela has implemented groundbreaking initiatives locally such as healthy grocery delivery, culinary medicine classes, a hospital-based farmers market, and healthy choices to-go from the hospital cafeteria. These programs are not only increasing access to whole food, plant-based nutrition but are also empowering individuals to make sustainable dietary changes, resulting in ongoing, measurable improvements in community health.

Her leadership and innovation are evident in her ability to identify critical needs by listening to community voice and develop creative solutions that inspire meaningful, relevant and care-based change. Angela’s work has help secure leading funding and recognition, including a CORE SC research grant and two Duke Endowment Awards in Health Care, which are supporting local, community-based efforts to address food insecurity and chronic diseases in one of South Carolina’s most underserved counties. Her initiatives are demonstrating the healing capacity of plant-based nutrition, fostering healthier lifestyles and reducing health disparities.

As the founder and President of The Good Fruit Foundation, Angela has further amplified her impact by serving as the backbone organization for next phase work in Lifestyle Medicine at the Allendale County Hospital and the Allendale County HEALing Partners coalition. Through this role, she has built a network of local, regional, state, and national partnerships, collaborating with organizations like the South Carolina Office of Rural Health, the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, Instacart Health, Golden Harvest Food Bank, and small local farmers. Her ability to unite diverse stakeholders under a shared vision is strengthening newfound community resilience and creating a sustainable framework for addressing health-related social needs for the days ahead. Angela’s leadership in developing models that live out "acceptance of all people" is helping ensure that underserved communities and individuals receive coordinated, relevant, and accessible community-engaged lifestyle medicine interventions.

Angela’s work is a testament to her unwavering dedication to improving lives through compassion, collaboration, and innovation. Her belief in the value and healing power of plant-based initiatives is inspiring systemic change, empowering communities with renewed confidence, and creating a lasting impact on health equity and nutrition access in rural South Carolina.

“I have called you back from the ends of the earth, saying, ‘You are my servant.’ For I have chosen you and will not throw you away. Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.”

Isaiah 41:9-10

Our Mission

The mission of our work, through The Good Fruit Foundation and the Food is Medicine program, is rooted in a deep love for others and a belief in the transformative power of locally-grown nutrition to heal and empower communities. By addressing health-related social needs, our initiatives focus on improving access to healthy food, reducing health disparities, and fostering sustainable lifestyle changes in underserved communities. Through innovative programs like hospital-based farmers markets, culinary medicine classes, and food pharmacy approaches, we are creating pathways to better health and well-being. Our leadership as the backbone of the Allendale County HEALing Partners coalition and the development of a Community Care Hub model is demonstrating our commitment to collaboration, equity, and systemic change. Together with local, regional, and national partners, our work is building a healthier, more connected, and compassionate future for rural communities in South Carolina.

Parable of the Three Servants | Matthew 25:14-30

“Again, the Kingdom of Heaven can be  illustrated by the story of a man going on a long trip. He called  together his servants and entrusted his money to them while he was gone. He gave five bags of silver to one, two bags of silver to another, and one bag of silver to the last—dividing it in proportion to their abilities. He then left on his  trip.

“The servant who received the five bags of silver began to invest the money and earned five more. The servant with two bags of silver also went to work and earned two more. But the servant who received the one bag of silver dug a hole in the ground and hid the master’s money.

“After a long time their master returned from his trip and called them to give an account of how they had used his money. The  servant to whom he had entrusted the five bags of silver came forward  with five more and said, ‘Master, you gave me five bags of silver to  invest, and I have earned five more.’ “The  master was full of praise. ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give  you many more responsibilities. Let’s celebrate together!’

“The  servant who had received the two bags of silver came forward and said,  ‘Master, you gave me two bags of silver to invest, and I have earned two  more.’ “The  master said, ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more  responsibilities. Let’s celebrate together!’  |  Matthew 25:14-23 NLT

As a founding member,

"Each day, where I live, learn, work, play, and pray, my personal mission is to put into action the generosity that comes from a faith in Christ as I understand and experience all the good things we have in His love, serving together as one in the Spirit of the Gospel, as a compassionate and transforming healing presence, refreshing the hearts of the needy and restoring hope in a good and immensely loving Lord, as I am myself, daily and actively renewed by Christ's own example of authentic, actionable, and applied grace in our Father's love for each of us."

Scriptural guidance: Philemon 1:4-7 ("I always thank my God when I pray for you, Philemon, because I keep hearing about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all of God’s people. And I am praying that you will put into action the generosity that comes from your faith as you understand and experience all the good things we have in Christ. Your love has given me much joy and comfort, my brother, for your kindness has often refreshed the hearts of God’s people.")

- Angela Rainwater, Board President, The Good Fruit Foundation

As a founding member,

"As founder of The Good Fruit Foundation, my personal vision is to be strong and courageous with all hope in the Lord in a daily, unyielding love for others, where through peaceful action as words of ministry, a quiet, confident, spirit-led work of good fruit will renew, strengthen, and encourage others, producing an abundance of Christ's love and goodness, fulfilling the words in responsible stewardship, "well done good and faithful servant." "

Scriptural guidance: Psalm 31:24 ("So be strong and courageous, all you who put your hope in the Lord!"); 1 Corinthians 12 (Spiritual Gifts); 1 Corinthians 13 (Love in perspective as key); 1 Corinthians 14 (build up the church; be useful and understandable), Matthew 25 (how have you managed the blessings and abilities I gave you?)

using our God-given gifts to serve others

the basis for love in action

"So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”   John 13:34-35 (NLT)

" —when God our Savior revealed His kindness and love, He saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of His mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit. He generously poured out the Spirit upon us through Jesus Christ our Savior.  Because of His grace He made us right in His sight and gave us confidence that we will inherit eternal life.

This  is a trustworthy saying, and I want you to insist on these teachings so that all who trust in God will devote themselves to doing good. These teachings are good and beneficial for everyone.  Titus 3:4-8 (NLT)

"God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another."  1 Peter 4:10 (NLT)

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. ”  Galatians 5:22-23
